Reality Stars Singing

Why oh why do some people who have had their 15 minutes of reality fame feel the need to try to stretch it into an awkward singing career? The latest to attempt this feat is Heidi Montag of The Hills. If you've been fortunate enough to miss her first video I'll fill you in: you know when you watch someone try to pick up at a bar and it's so painful you're embarrassed for them? Yeah, well, that's the only way to explain this video that could very well have been a drunken day at the beach shot on a cell phone. The only good thing about her acting is it distracts you from the singing.

But really, who could blame her? She probably took one look at the gems put out by Paris Hilton and though, hey I can skank around in a bathing suit, too! The sad thing is, some people will go out and buy an album put out by Heidi.

If she was talented, I wouldn't give a hoot that she was on a reality TV show and used that as a jumping off point for her musical career. But the girl has no real talent. Yet her video and music are out there. The same can be said for Paris Hilton, even though her videos are a bit more professional. She also has minimal to no talent. It's painful to listen to her and watch her in her videos, but because she's a celebrity for well, being a celebrity, her music and video get airtime.

There are plenty of wonderful singer song writers who can't get any airtime. Very talented artist. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for them. And it ticks me off. Maybe they should try out for The Hills and go from there.

Getting Started With Sight Reading On Guitar

Let's face it... sight reading is one of the hardest skills to develop on the guitar.

Most of us have too much fun learning music by ear or just use guitar tabs. But learning how to sight read on guitar can lead to getting gigs and open up your ability to expand your repertoire.

So... how do you get started?

Most guitar methods start you off by learning the notes in the open/first position. This is all well and good, but you should also practice reading up and down strings as well as diagonally across the fretboard.

Before you even try to sight read a piece of music on guitar, here's what you need to understand first:

Only after you've mastered the fundamentals (the note names, the rhythm, and where the notes are on the guitar) should you attempt to sight read the music live.

Always practice slow enough that it's easy, and then speed it up.

Once you've got the hang of a piece of music in a give position, try playing it in another position.

Sight reading on guitar takes a lot of time to get used to, but it's worth it.

For a musician, your songs are your art. They are the physical embodiment of your creative gifts. Every bit of anger, happiness, angst, joy, pain, elation, knowledge or humor goes into the story known as your song. You write and re-write it, scouring over each note and wordperfecting it for recording and live performance.

But when you play it for others, youre not getting the reaction you expected. Your friends, fans and family seem less than enthusiastic as they dully respond, Yeah. That wasumgood. How could this be? You poured your soul into this piece. This was your Stairway To Heaven! This was your Smells Like Team Spirit! Its a lyrically amazing ode about the persecution of pagan midwives in grass hut tribes! It flows, it breathes, and its seven and a half minutes of pure musical perfection!

Whoa. Stop right there, Mozart. You wrote a seven and a half minute song about the persecution of pagan midwives in grass hut tribes and youre wondering why youre thirteen year-old cousin fell asleep in the middle of the fourth verse? You wrote a seven and a half minute song about the persecution of pagan midwives in grass hut tribes and youre confused as to why your drummers girlfriend began calling her friends on her cell phone before the song had reached its bridge?

It may be hard to believe when youre penning an opus such as this, but the normal human brain is wired a little differently than an accomplished musicians, like yourself. And although music is art, its also popular culture and the goal should be for others to enjoy your creative efforts as much as you do.

So, how can you make sure that your writing experience is as positive as your audiences listening experience? What can you, as musicians do, to eliminate aspects of your songs that may alienate, confuse or just plain bore your fans?

The following are a few tips that may add success to your songwriting experience:

1.) After Four Minutes, It Becomes Background Music---Music aficionados aside, the average person has roughly the attention span of a young adult hummingbird. As a songwriter, you need to grab your audiences attention and hold it until the end of the song before they flit off to something else more interesting to them. Although four minutes (or less) may seem like the blink of an eye when a songwriter is storytelling, its a very long time to expect your run-of-the-mill club-goer or web-surfer to stay fixated on your music.

2.) Tell Your Story As Directly As Possible---We all love allusions, allegories, vague references, and subtle metaphors but use them sparingly or become a beat poet. A little abstractness goes a long way when writing a popular song. Song lyrics fly into peoples minds as quickly as the bassist plucks out quarter notes. If you make your lyrics too complicated, then your audience may still be trying to figure out the verse when youre already playing the chorus. This could prompt the average listener to tune out your masterpiece, order another beer and switch on their Ipod.

3.) If English Is Your First Language, Use It In Your Song---Its great that youre an educated, cultured, artistic intellectual sponge. But remember that most people who hear your music are not book worms or art whores. Big, involved words make for memorable song lyrics but use them occasionaly. Its good for your fans to ponder the meaning of a particular lyric but give them too many to ponder and theyll get so caught up in the words that they may forget your song.

4.) Obscure Musicality Can Be Confusing Too---Lyrics arent the only way to confuse the average listener. Obscure time signatures, discordant instrumentation and avant guard drum lines may seem like genius to your fellow musicians, but if your listeners cant tap and/or hum along, you may find yourself only invited to perform in underground opium bars where the audience members have all had one too many hash brownie.

If youre not sure where to begin, start simple. Write a short, but sweet, song that packs an emotional punch in a universal way. Write about something everyone is familiar with: love, politics, lifestyle issues or the sociology of being a human being on the planet. Once people have fallen in love with your music, it will be easier to get them to give the extra listen to your more complicated, artistic pieces.

Remember that just because a song is popular or easily understood, doesnt mean that its not good creativity. Art is subjective, and truly in the eye of the beholder. Your least favorite song could be someone elses favorite. You never have to stop being creative or artistic, just acknowledge that theres an audience out there that wants to hear what you have to saybut theyll need to be able to comprehend it first.

Musical Feuds

There are many famous instances of immortal musicians being insulted by other famous musicians.

Johann Sebastian Bach, like most musicians of the day, worked as a church musician. He was anything but docile, and was known to rankle easily.

He was once reproved for playing "strange harmonies" during a church service. Bach's answer was to play even stranger harmonies the next Sunday, and this from the greatest composer of religious music the world has ever seen, the composer of the St. Matthew Passion.

Still steaming, the elders complained again to Bach and added the insult that the music was at some points "too long."

The next Sunday, of course, the music was much too short.

Beethoven also had his feuds, especially in the early years when he was establishing himself as a great pianist.

A worthless popinjay named Steibelt had made it known that he thought Beethoven a terrible pianist, and in essence challenged Beethoven to a musical duel, a common occurrence in those days. Beethoven despised Steibelt, for he was in truth a talentless oaf that foolishly dared to challenge a great master.

At a party the next week, Beethoven heard Steibelt playing one of his own compositions, an insipid Trio for piano, violin and cello. It was the type of horrid, elaborately ornamented fluff that Beethoven reviled, but he watched calmly as Steibelt finished the piece and took his bows.

A hush fell over the crowd as Beethoven appeared out of the shadows and walked toward the piano. Everyone was aware of the grudge between Steibelt and Beethoven and the air was thick with apprehension.

Steibelt, startled by the angry look on the master's face, stepped away from the piano.

As Beethoven walked past the cello's music stand, he snidely grabbed the cello's sheet music.

Carefully showing the astounded crowd the page of sheet music, Beethoven sat at the piano and then put the music, upside down, onto the piano music stand.

As Steibelt and the hushed crowd watched, Beethoven plunked out the notes of the upside down cello part, forcefully jabbing with his pointed and angry index finger, not taking his eyes off Steibelt.

Then Ludwig began to improvise like a madman on Steibelt's upside down cello part theme. The crowd was carried away with Beethoven's angered showmanship.

And it was magnificent, one of those legendary Beethoven improvisations that have gone down in history, a passionate outpouring of ideas and bravura, until at last the piece was over with a furious ending and crash.

Curiously, Steibelt was never heard from again.

If you can't read music, acoustic guitar tabs are the way to go for learning new songs. The internet is loaded with tab sites that will most definitely have the song you are looking for. I must say, the ones you pay for are usually better than the free ones but it is not always the case.

When you are searching for acoustic guitar tabs, have a guitar with you. The reason I recommend doing this is because you will want to play through it a little bit to check for accuracy. If the tune sounds real bad find another one and try that. When you find the one that you like and sounds good print out that one. Don't just print the first one you find. I have got myself a great collection of awful acoustic guitar tabs from students who just print out the first one they find and assume it's right.

Another thought to keep in mind is this. Just because you found it on the internet does not mean it is right. Acoustic guitar tabs are not correct just because someone on a site said they were. The reason that I want you to know this is so you don't think you suck at guitar because you can't get a song to sound right. I don't want you to give up because you have an acoustic guitar tab that tells you the wrong chords!

Building you collection of tabs is important. I recommend getting a folder that you can keep all of your tunes in. This way it is easy to find when you want to review a part later on down the road. It is a good way to remind you what songs you know. Sounds weird but after a few years you will have so many acoustic guitar tabs that you will start forgetting the tunes that you worked on. That's actually a very good feeling.

So grab yourself a folder and fill it up with acoustic guitar tabs and start playing!

Beginner Guitar DVD - Choosing the Best Program

Even if you have never picked up a guitar in your life, you can learn to play like a professional with practice, time, and of course, the right beginner guitar DVD. The key to success is choosing the best program, the DVD that will work with the way you learn. The good news is that you have quite a selection. With the interest in learning to play guitar on the rise, more and more quality programs have been developed.

While many beginner guitar DVD programs are excellent, some are simply not worth the price. Therefore, we wanted to provide you with some tips for choosing the best program. First, the DVD needs to be made professionally. This means choosing a program taught by someone with experience in teaching guitar but also a company that produces high quality resolution and sound. Otherwise, you could end up with a DVD that skids around, is blurry, and just poor quality, which can be frustrating for the person doing the viewing.

Second, make sure you choose a true beginner guitar DVD. Sometimes, you will find companies that sell products that say they are for the beginner but as soon as you begin watching, you realize many of the important basics have been passed over. Additionally, while choosing a DVD that combines lessons for the beginner and intermediate player is usually a cost-savings solution, the DVD needs to provide enough information for the beginner rather than just touching on a few of the basics and then moving into intermediate play.

We also suggest you choose a beginner guitar DVD that teaches the type of music you want to play. Sure, you could choose something that covers a variety of music, which is nice in giving you a glimpse of other styles, but it may not be what you ultimately want. For this reason, if you want to learn classical guitar, choose a DVD that teaches classical guitar music or if you want to play heavy metal, a DVD that focuses on heavy metal music.

Although not necessary, a DVD that offers jam tracks is a huge benefit in that you have the chance to play along with a pro. Obviously, as you gain more and more experience, you can take the music taught and expound it to create your own style. Then, a beginner guitar DVD that has the capability for the guitar lead to be tuned out is also helpful. With this, you could play the lead yourself, backed by other musicians.

Our final tip for choosing the best beginner guitar DVD is to choose one that has a variety of lessons but at a beginner's level. For instance, you want a DVD that covers finger positioning, body position, and holding the guitar properly, as well as chords, strumming, tablature, sliding, and bending. If you go with a DVD that has a variety of techniques that is great but just be sure that they match your current playing level.

Band agreements.

If you write songs within a band, you need to plan for the day when you will be earning royalties from your songs, and be clear what will happen if a member of the band leaves or if the band splits up.
The best way to deal with this is to all agree what is fair, and then put this in writing as a formal agreement which you all sign. This way there is little chance of any comeback if the band splits for less than amicable reasons.

Here are a few specific points you should consider:

  1. If a member of the band leaves, do they forfeit all rights to the songs, and the songs remain the sole property of the band?

  2. Are the songs written by one person, or a few principal writers, who wish to retain all rights?

  3. If a band member leaves would both he and the band both retain a claim to the song, (this is probably the most likely option).

  4. How do you determine each persons share?

Do you base it on a song by song basis ranking each members input, or use the same formula for every song.

Do you simply divide everything up equally, (i.e. 5 members each own 20% of all the songs and therefore receives 20% of the proceeds/royalties), or do you rank each individuals input?

  5. If a member leaves, can he/she perform or profit from the music outside of the band.

Sample band contracts can be viewed and downloaded from the following sites:
http://undercurrents.com/agreements/agreement-bandmember.html,
http://www.blues101.org/articles/promotion1.htm and
http://www.musicianassist.com/archive/contract/files/member.htm

The advice from the UK Copyright Service on this subject is:

Where music is written as a group effort, we recommend that you draw up an agreement to clarify issues, such as which rights belong to which member, and how royalties would be distributed in the event that members of your group leave.

For successful commercial bands, incorporation is also an option. As with a normal incorporated company, the band members would own shares in the band/company. In this situation, a band member would typically sell his shares to the other members if he decided to leave.

When you're picking rap instrumental beats for your hip-hop or R&B album, there are a couple of things you need to carefully consider and listen for, if you want a clean and consistent sound without over-spending.

1. Find Beats That Are Properly Equalized (Or E.Q.'d)

I hate to be the one to tell you this but if you're using rap instrumental beats that your buddy made on fruity loops, they're probably not hitting hard enough. If you really want your beats to "Crack" as they say, you need beats that have been "e.q.'d" or "equalized" properly. It's really important because it determines how good your song sounds in any stereo system or on any mp3 player. Ever played one of your tracks in the car, and it sounded way different than when you played it on your computer, or in your friend's car? That's because the beat hasn't been equalized properly, and if you're serious about putting out a good album that can play on the radio or in the clubs, you absolutely have to use beats that have been e.q.'d properly. Equalizing is no easy task and takes a long time to learn. And if you want to pay someone to do it, be ready to spend a couple hundred dollars.

2. Find Beats That Are Properly "Panned"

If you can't hear your vocals very well because they're getting washed out by the beat (or vise-versa), then your beat isn't stereo-panned properly. This can be a problem! Knowing which instruments to stereo, and how much to pan them, can take quite a while to figure out. No matter how many instruments are being used in the beat, you should NEVER have a problem hearing the vocals. And no, it's not your mic or your software. The beat is messed up. Find rap instrumental beats that are stereo-panned correctly and have a nice even sound, with no one instrument blaring over the top of the others.

3. Find Beats That You Can "Lease"

This one can be tough just because we all want to "own" our music and can't stand the thought of someone else out there having the same beat as us. Don't let your ego cost you a lot of money.

Remember, when you're putting together your album, if you do it right, you're probably only going to end up using a small percentage of the songs you've recorded. For example, you should probably have at least 30 songs recorded before you find the 12-17 tracks that you really feel good about putting on your album. The bottom line here, is don't spend a bunch of money on exclusive rights to songs that you may never put on your album. Now if you find one that you know is going to be your radio single or your "banger," then it may be worth buying the exclusive rights to that beat. There are a few production companies that offer "leased" rap instrumental beats for a very low cost and you have almost all of the same rights to those beats that you would if you bought them exclusively. You can simply go to their website, find the beat/beats that you like, purchase with paypal, and download your beat instantly, in a high-quality mp3 file format. This is a cost-effective way to get high-quality beats for your project, in a short amount of time!

Gibson guitars have ruled the rock and roll roost for many years. Ever since the nineteen thirties when pioneer electric guitar player, Charlie Christian took to them, Gibson guitars have always been very popular with guitar players. They have the magic combination of technical excellence and prestige and pizzazz. As pioneers in the electric guitar field, they have always made good use of every opportunity to get their guitars played by the leading guitarists. The company began in 1936 but Gibson guitars took hold of the 1960's with both hands and gave the era a big tongue kiss. With the phenomenal growth of rock 'n' roll the solid body electric guitar which evolved in the fifties became the ultimate accessory for the young gentleman wishing to have loads of sex.

The era produced many famous Gibson guitar models like the Double Cutaway SG, the Firebird and the Flying V. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Chet Atkins all big names of the guitar, played Gibson guitars. And one of Gibson's triumphs - the Les Paul model was, and still is, in the hands of a boatload of guitar playing pioneers. The Les Paul model was the company's response to public enthusiasm for the electric guitar. Les Paul was arguably the most popular electric guitar player in the world who had previously invented his own solid body electric guitar. He was signed up by the Gibson company to lend his name to their new guitar and actually made some design suggestions which may or may not have been followed up, according to who you listen to.

But the world of making great guitars was not all cheese and crackers. In the late nineteen fifties the world was obsessed with "modern" things. Space travel was on the minds of many creative people working in a multitude of areas of industrial design. So it was one morning that the Gibson Flying V awoke and attempted to take flight. Unfortunately it only survived for about one year. It slept then until the flamboyant nineteen seventies welcomed it once more to the world. Some famous guitarists, Jimi Hendrix among them, played it for a while and it found its way into the shops again, but only for a short time. The Gibson company tried to rescue the situation by introducing the Firebird, a variation on the Flying V thought up by a car designer. The result looks more like a bad drawing of an electric guitar.

Recently Gibson has added an astounding feature to the world of guitar playing. The Powertune system. It gives electric guitars the ability to tune themselves, thus making sure that the secret of many professional guitar players remains perfectly safe. Another thing that might surprise some people is the fact that Gibson has held its own quite well in the area of acoustic guitar manufacturing. There is an Arlo Guthrie guitar in the Gibson Artist Signature Series of guitars. Possibly somebody in the early seventies thought Arlo was going to be really, really big. Other artists to have Gibson acoustic guitars named for them are Elvis Presley, Sheryl Crow, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson and Pete Townshend.

So if you find yourself wondering what makes Gibson guitars so special the answer is in the company's ability to keep its name alive in the mind of the guitar playing public.

How to Play Classical Guitar like Andres Segovia

Andres Segovia has had a profound impact on every aspect of the modern classical guitar from technique, to repertoire, venue, and even the construction of the guitar. And while you cant take lessons from him you can learn much from the wonderful legacy he has left behind.

Learn From a pupil of the master

Although you cant take lessons from the master himself you can take lessons from one of the great guitarists that studied under him. Christoper Parkening is one of the more famous pupils that studied under Segovia and he has his own, highly acclaimed series of instructional books for the classical guitar. It is called the Christoper Parkening Method.

Add the Segovia Picking technique to your repertoire

Segovia had a very unique way of plucking the strings with his right hand. While most of the classical guitar world debated whether a guitarist should pluck the strings with the fingertips or the fingernails Segovia used both. He had the unique style of plucking the strings so both the nail and fingertip made contact with the strings. Add this technique to your repertoire. It takes effort but is worth it.

Listen to his recordings with the ears of a musician

There is an astonishingly large selection of recordings by Segovia and you can learn a lot from him just by listening to him play. But make the transition from passive listening where you enjoy the music to active listening where you try to understand what he is doing and how he is doing it. This type of listening can, in a very short period of time, dramatically improve your playing ability.

Read his books and studies

He has many publications that you can learn from including Diatonic Major and Minor Scales, Segovia: My Book of the Guitar, and Andres Segovia: An Autobiography of the Years 1893 1920. He also has several transcriptions that you can play including Andres Segovia Studies for Guitar 178 (Estudios fur Gitarre), and his transcription that is considered to be one of the finest guitar transcriptions ever written 20 Studies for the Guitar. Mastery of these 20 pieces is considered to be the pinnacle in classical guitar performance and ability.

Take the Segovia Approach

One of the most important lessons you can learn from the master is that of constant questioning and improvement in all aspects of the guitar. This is something he spent a lifetime pursuing and you should do this too. Always make strides in your playing, your performance, and your technique. And dont pay too much attention to what is normal. It is through this foresight and courage to break new ground that Segovia rises above all others and this is a lesson that you can truly get a great benefit from.

While you may never be the next Andres Segovia you can dramatically improve your guitar playing by reading about and listening to the legacy that he left for us all to enjoy and emulate.

For more interesting insights and information about the classical guitar or to hear pieces played by the author visit his website at: The Classical Guitarist

Tobi Lark with Toronto - We're All In This Together

Singer Tobi Lark was born (named Bessie Gupton) in Alabama and raised in Detroit, where, like many soul and r&b singers, she performed in church choirs as a young girl. The daughter of gospel singer Emma Washington ,… (in post Tobi Lark with "Toronto" from Five Bucks On By-Tor. )

In the recent years there is no big issues involved in the question : "How to start your record company". One can follow six steps systematically to be up & kicking with your own record label.

The first question in the process as to how to start a record company, needs to make a solid business plan. This will allow one to fix starting dates, possible financing options, possible artist signups & addition , venues of operation. If you don't know how to write a business plan, then it is wiser to take professional help in this regard.

Deciding the initial setup in which you will be confronted with the factor of the venue , amongst the criteria included in the "how to start your record company", one may end up deciding in favor of one's own house or a rented space. If you start initially from your house, it will restrict your operation budget, which is indeed a relief. Also the equipment necessary for this has shrunk in space & also in price, than the early days equipments.
A proper balance must be maintained to do the same.

Step three in deciding how to start a record company includes the studio setup plan, and the plans of projecting your artistes. You can now continue to chalk out your financial plans & projections.
